A Shippo picture with a white camellia design.
Although there is a popular belief that camellias are bad luck because the flower heads fall off, camellias have been considered a sacred flower with the power to ward off evil since the Heian period (794-1185), and were used in Shinto rituals.
The camellia has been popular as an auspicious symbol of severe winter and early spring because of its beautiful blooms in the midst of a harsh winter.
In the past, camellia kimonos were ordered for daughters to ward off bad luck and to wish for a healthy and happy upbringing.
