Philosophy

Colors that never fade.
One of a kind in the world.

For five generations since 1883, Tamura Shippo has made cloisonné in Shippo-cho, Ama — the heartland of Owari cloisonné. We keep making because we want to hand this beautiful tradition, designated a Traditional Craft of Japan, on to the next generation.

Cloisonné is a craft of drawing with fine silver wire, laying glass enamel one color at a time, and firing the piece again and again. Nothing is left to chance: color, line and luster are all deliberately designed. That is why each finished piece is truly one of a kind.

  1. 01

    Inherit

The skill and the eye refined in one place for more than 140 years, handed from parent to child and from master to apprentice.

  2. 02

    Design

The color we imagine, in the place we imagine it. Every step is intentional, so that no piece is an accident.

  3. 03

    Keep challenging

While protecting traditional technique, we renew patterns, designs and the ways we share our work with each era.
